Top Shooter Game Series of the Last Decade

Over the past decade, shooter games have evolved from mindless bullet-fests into cinematic, tactical, and even emotional experiences (yes, we’re still crying over Ghost in Modern Warfare). Developers have pushed the envelope in terms of graphics, AI, multiplayer design, and storytelling. And also, loot boxes. Let’s not forget loot boxes. Here’s a look at the most iconic shooter game series from the last ten years that not only dominated our hard drives but also our free time—and probably ruined a few relationships along the way.

By someone who has died at least 4,000 times in Warzone 😎

1. Call of Duty (CoD) – Activision

The granddaddy of all FPS franchises. From Modern Warfare (2019) to Black Ops Cold War to the ever-evolving Warzone, Call of Duty has continued to rake in billions. The campaigns may be short, but the multiplayer… well, it’s where friendships go to die. Activision’s formula of fast-paced action, high-budget set pieces, and seasonal content keeps it at the top. According to Statista, the franchise has generated over $30 billion in revenue by 2024.

2. Apex Legends – Respawn Entertainment / EA

Surprise-released in 2019, Apex Legends didn’t just enter the Battle Royale scene—it punched it in the face. Fast-paced movement, unique heroes (Legends), and ping systems that made mic-less players useful. With over 130 million registered players globally, Respawn and EA struck gold. And according to EA’s financial reports, Apex generated over $2 billion in revenue in just three years. Take that, Fortnite (just kidding, please don’t start a comment war).

3. Rainbow Six Siege – Ubisoft

Released in 2015, Siege had a rocky start. But Ubisoft doubled down with updates and turned this tactical shooter into an esports darling. It emphasizes destruction, teamwork, and yelling at your friends for peeking corners. Ubisoft has sold over 75 million copies and maintained a steady player base thanks to constant updates and Operator reworks. The cost of development? Rumored to be over $50 million—but the long-term ROI proves it was worth the stress (and therapy).

4. Destiny Series – Bungie

Part MMO, part FPS, and part “I swear this loot will drop this time,” Destiny and Destiny 2 brought high-concept sci-fi into the FPS world. Bungie, the OG creators of Halo, infused their famous gunplay into a cosmic setting with raids, PvP, and armor that looks cooler than your wardrobe. Destiny 2 alone surpassed 300 million players and its expansions like The Witch Queen set new engagement records.

5. Overwatch – Blizzard Entertainment

When Overwatch dropped in 2016, it wasn’t just a game—it was a cultural moment. The team-based hero shooter brought personality, memes, and chaotic team fights. It won Game of the Year in 2016 and built a massive esports league. While Overwatch 2 stumbled a bit, Blizzard still managed to keep things alive thanks to a loyal (if slightly aggressive) fanbase. Oh, and let’s not forget the fan art. There’s… a lot of it.

Honorable Mentions

  • Battlefield Series – DICE/EA: Large-scale battles, destructible environments, and that one guy flying jets upside down.
  • Titanfall 2 – Respawn: A masterpiece that deserved more love. Wall-running and mech combat done right.
  • Valorant – Riot Games: Tactical shooting meets magical anime powers. Somehow, it works.

Quote: “Shooters have gone from point-and-click to cinematic masterpieces—with a lot more yelling over mics.” – IGN, probably.
