What Causes Heavy Eyes and Eyelids?
You see, everybody has, at some point, experienced a heaviness in one’s eyelids. But what causes that sensation? And how would one treat it?
1. Fatigue
- When you’re tired too much, the fatigue can also attack other muscles, including those lifting up the eyelid. Therefore, it makes a person’s eyelid feel heavy, and they would want to close it. Usually, after rest and sleep, the problem disappears.
2. Genetics
- If the parents or grandparents or some blood relatives have droopy eyelids, then chances would increase that a person may also develop some problems related to it drooping or becoming heavy.
3. Age
- As you grow older, your skin becomes less elastic. Also, rubbing your eyes might happen more often or expose them to sunlight over time, which stretches the delicate skin of the eyelids—which happen to be the thinnest skin in the body. When this happens, eyelids may not perform well anymore.
4. Allergies
- Heaviness could be associated with allergy suffering in the way of seasonal or from other aspects, causing swollen eyelids. Usually, itching and redness would accompany it.
5. Dry Eyes
- If your eyes don’t produce enough tears or the quality of tears is poor, you might suffer from dry eyes. This condition can lead to heavy eyelids, burning sensations, and redness. Over-the-counter medications can help, and in some cases, surgical options may be recommended.
6. Blepharitis
- Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids that can cause them to feel heavy. It may also cause redness along the lash line. The first step in treating blepharitis is applying warm compresses and using eyelid scrubs. Sometimes, eye drops and other treatments are also prescribed.
7. Ptosis (Droopy Eyelid)
- If your upper eyelid droops lower than usual, you may have ptosis. This can affect both your vision and the appearance of your eyes. Some doctors may recommend eyelid surgery called blepharoplasty. If a muscle disorder is the root cause, that underlying condition must be treated first.
